Henry Thoreau once said, “It is not what you look at that matters, but what you see.” Leaders need to be intentional about understanding things through the perspective of others (perspective taking). When faced with a problem or obstacle in leadership, it is important to understand the problem before making a decision. A leader’s ability to gain new perspectives around an issue is a characteristic that separates successful leaders from those who seem to get “stuck where they are” in developing high performing teams and organizations.
