Lean Six Sigma in Manufacturing Industry: An Overview

Recently, Lean Six Sigma (LSS) has become one of the most common business strategies for deploying continuous improvement in the manufacturing sector. LSS combines the Lean manufacturing philosophy and Six Sigma tools to eliminate the waste of physical resources, time and effort, while assuring quality in production and organizational processes. Lean focuses on reducing non-value-added activities which fall under one of the seven types of wastes: time, inventory, motion, waiting, over production, over processing and defect. On the other hand, Six Sigma is a data-driven methodology that aims to reduce process variation. Dr. Ahmed, an assistant professor of manufacturing management at the University of Minnesota – Crookston, will go through an overview of LSS methodology.
